This first model was to establish the basic positioning of the continents.

Note: Australia and Antarctica’s relationship with Africa. These positions differ from the current Pangaean configuration of continents as described by the following image.

 

The present day interpretation of Pangaea places it on one side of the Earth (of present diameter) with the rest of the Earth’s surface area being taken up by the Panthalassic Ocean-bed. However, there are no robust theories as to what happened to this ocean bed; did it all disappear by sub-duction? We know that there is no ocean-bed crust older than 250 million years old. Pangaea existed about 320 million years ago.
