Antarctica’s Collision with Australia

 

Before the Atlantic Ocean bed had developed and separated South America from Africa,

Antarctica, being displaced by the continuing growth of the Pacific Ocean bed, was pushed past the tips of both continents. About 60 million years ago it collided with the southern coast of Australia. Antarctica’s eastern landmass modified Australia’s shape, considerably.
